Had a nice chat with Jen & Jeffre tonight on Skype.
But I stayed on the computer too long tonight. I knew this because Charles then called me on iChat from across the room. To tell me it was time for bed…
Friday was a national holiday: Australia Day. Kind of like Independence Day, except they’re not -they still recognise the Queen.
It started bright and early for me with one of my new workouts on the beach. The trainer yelled a couple of times for us to push harder and give it an Australia Day go. But all I could think about was Charles at home asleep like a kangaroo on a hot day. Or a wombat or, really, any of the Australian animals. They wouldn’t be out there on the beach.
During the day I joined Larissa and her work friends for a game of bowls. Again, more lounging than bowling.
And at night we met up with most of the pub crawl crew, you guessed it, at a pub.

There was a big debate going on in the news about overt displays of patriotism. A big music concert wanted to ban the wearing of the flag because some people starting to use it almost as gang colours. Apparently, this is a new thing here -the playing of the national anthem and the wearing of the flag. And it makes many people very nervous. They are proud of their country because people aren’t prideful about their country. They are pretentious about being unpretentious.
But it’s changing these days. Too much American influence, they say.
Here’s the national anthem, by the way:
Australians all let us rejoice, for we are young and free
With golden soil and wealth for toil, our home is girt by sea
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts of beauty rich and rare
In history’s page let every stage advance Australia fair (Advance Australia fair)
Apparently it fits perfectly with Gilligan’s Island.
Hello. I got a call today from a loved one making sure everything was o.k. since I hadn’t posted anything here in several days. Apologies to those who have missed me. Both of you.
Everything is just dandy. Have been writing more these days so not as much to say here for some reason.
Also I have a tendency to totally focus on whatever I’m doing at the time. Annoyingly so, it seems. So when Charles walks in at the end of the day, I’m still here absorbed in the computer rather than leaping to my feet to greet him at the door. With his slippers. And his pipe. All in all it’s not great for marital bliss. In fact it rather looks like ignoring from the outside. So I’m trying to break that habit by actually shut down the computer at night. Unfortunately, that’s the easiest time to write in Carpe Via since if I do it during the day, I feel guilty that I’m not working. Oh the mental boxes.
Any hoo. This week I joined an exercise class thing. They meet on different beaches each day and do different work-outs. Including cycling and kayaking. So I’m looking forward to having the structure and having all that done before 7am each day. After a few months I’ll be both fit and early -and oh so smug. Poor Charles.
Something witty. Something witty. A touch of personal.
Stab at depth.
Little joke.
Sign off.
