Trip to the US 05

Monday, August 1st, 2005

Sadly, we only have a few pictures of the trip since a few rolls have been lost (the trip to the cabin!) and we didn’t have a camera in SF.

Here a just a few highlights (minus the my homesick musings about the people I miss and love):

  • Charles caught his first fish.
  • Katherine and I got into a fabulous debate about public education and have decided to each do more research and meet again to discuss (a bit quieter next time perhaps).
  • Everyone we visited had a better home than us. Full of plants and color and smart interior design.
  • We got very fat from eating out all the time.
    • Hmmm, looks familiarHmmm, looks familiar
Charles’ new hair looks very familiar…
  • The world needs to see Tom’s photos of life in the 70s. Haunting and, dare I say, Ephemeral.
  • Dad loaned us the K car to drive up North. It had been sitting in the orchard for several years and had gathered a bit of mold around the exterior. We were able to scrub off most of it but at Dad’s suggestion, we left a ‘racing stripe’ on the roof.
  • Took a ferry to the San Juan islands and camped with the family on Aunt Nett and Uncle Steave’s new property. It was the first time Dilbar had met the whole family -but she already married Jake so it was too late to run away.

  • We stayed one night at a fancy hotel in Vancouver BC and was sure to warn the valet not to scratch the K car.
  • The best part of course was just being able to spend time with people. And while it was almost a month long vacation, in the end it felt both too long (we were craving the structure of our routine) and too short. Trips like this always show me exactly what I’m missing by being so far away: the little every day detail. The luxury of not having to fill in the background before we jump to the story of the day. Or to be able to just pop in and baby-sit for a few hours in the middle of an afternoon.
