Day 7 Strength & Grace

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

Here in Singapore at the conference.

The speech went well. And there were lots of great speakers to sit back and listen to afterwards.

I just got back from wandering around a bit. It’s hot out and there’s a whole second wave of activity that gets going at night. I love that about India too. In fact, being here is making me homesick for Margao.

I walked down one street and there were only pubs and bridal shops. Side by side. Literally 20-30 shops selling wedding dresses, surrounded by bar after bar.

I don’t know. Somehow it fits.

Home

I have many homes. I use the word willy-nilly. It’s bigger to me than any house, it hops to good friends and even applies to places I’ve actually never lived -like Dad’s orchard. Or Trieste Cafe in North Beach:

When I walked up here today I said to myself, “home.” And here I am now surrounded by the same music, the same group of writers in the corner table, and the same barista making a focaccia sandwich.

And now they have free wifi. Life doesn’t get much better than this.

Medium sized

My friend Jen flew in from Amsterdam (she happened to be in SF) just as the rest of my family flew out. Thus avoiding a dramatic emotional crash. I have many words in praise of Jen and my wonderful other friends but this is not that blog entry. This one is about the popcorn and drink combo we bought at the movies. The drinks she is holding are not the jumbo size, nor the large. Oh no.

Yes, my friends, this is America.

IMG_3454.JPGSo good to be back in the Northwest. The land of hugs. Of free wifi. And of roasted potato breakfasts.
